What is a Licence-free vehicle?
The licence-free vehicle is considered as a moped. A light quadricycle, also called a buggy or an AM-licence car.
Since 1st January 2017, licence-free vehicles have the following technical characteristics:
- The operating weight when empty is restricted to 425 kg
- A electric engine limited to 6 kW
- Number of seats limited to 2
What do you need to be able to drive?
To be able to drive a licence-free car in France, you must:
- Be aged 14 or over
- Be in possession of an AM licence (= moped licence), for all persons born on or after 1st January 1988
- Be in possession of a BSR licence (= road safety certificate), obtained before 19th January 2013, for all persons born on or after 1st January 1988
- You do not need a licence if you were born before 31st January 1987
- You may drive anywhere on the street, except on the motorway/highway and dual carriageways
